The Week’s Twitter Updates for 2010-03-08
- Assuming I didn’t mess anything up, I’ve placed my first semi-Split Lip-related t-shirt order. #
- Conan, what is good? When you finish a novel, wonder what to read next, and a big box from Amazon is waiting at the mailbox. #
- House of the Devil = Aesthetically dead on; dramatically a good deal too slow. A few nice bits at the end, though. #
- Now _that’s_ a Friday. Thirteen pages of script and a new Split Lip story is done. Next: Korean food. #
- There’s a good chance I’m in the middle of writing the most disturbing Split Lip scene ever. Kind of awesome, kind of queasy. #
- @joschwa Whoa! That is _awesome_! Congrats, man. Hope it’s yours in no time at all. in reply to joschwa #
- Three pages of Split Lip script on a queasy stomach seems like enough for today. #

- 3 new pages of the “The Pieces of Meat”up at Split Lip today by me and Dirk Shearer. bit.ly/9AXTX5 #
- Just discovered Brick City, a @SundanceChannel show about Newark, NJ, and Mayor Cory Booker. Amazing stuff. You guys seen this? #

- @debaoki I just discovered Beard Papa for the 1st time when in LA last week. It was awesome! in reply to debaoki #
- You’re not assembling furniture until you do something wrong and have to remove lots of pieces and redo it. Done now, though. #
- Needs revising, but I just finished a new Split Lip script. Sort of Fisher King via the Dust Bowl. When ready, it’ll be drawn by @tjkirsch! #
- OK, still trickier than the average theme, but Comicpress is starting to make more sense. But wow does it have a lot of components. #
- Haul me up the hillside, hold me high and let me go. #
- @lazzyfair No, but haven’t looked much. I’d check those who did iPhone (comiXology, Panelfly, etc). Good article on it: http://bit.ly/clR9tQ in reply to lazzyfair #
- @lazzyfair Totally. Getting that first number and barcode to put on your book feels pretty great. in reply to lazzyfair #
- @lazzyfair It seems confusing at first, but once you buy one ISBN and set it up, it’s pretty clear/easy. in reply to lazzyfair #
- @lazzyfair Then you create a book listing and assign it to an ISBN thru the website. Bowker.com is the ISBN org. They do barcodes, too in reply to lazzyfair #
- @lazzyfair Basically, yeah. You buy a single, or 10 pack of ISBNs (maybe other groups, can’t remember). continued … in reply to lazzyfair #
- @lazzyfair Not tremendously deep experience, but I bought a handful of ISBNs recently. Happy to share any of my experiences that are useful #
- Wow, Comicpress is tricky. And I say that as a dude who can hack his way through WordPress themes with some facility. #

- A bug prevents homepage updates, but the new Split Lip story, “The Pieces of Meat” (art by Dirk Shearer), starts here: http://bit.ly/9AXTX5 #
- Dear CBS: Thanks to your anti-choice, homophobic ad decisions, I am not watching the SuperBowl for the 1st time in 20 years. Well done. #
- And what I like even less? Looks like the bug has been present for a couple weeks and I’m just now noticing. Terrific. #
- Know what I like? When WebcomicsNation bugs stop me updating Split Lip’s homepage to promote a new story. Oh wait, I don’t like that at all #
- Chairy from Pee Wee is disturbingly reminiscent of Edogawa Rampo’s The Human Chair. #childhoodiscreepynow #
- Settling in to watch The PeeWee Herman Show, live in LA. #
- Also, there’s a live band during Lakers games. Awesome, but WTF. #
- Section 303 in the Staples Center is precariously steep. #
- @KateLMills True. And you have much more hair than me. in reply to KateLMills #
- Driving thru LA in a Dodge Charger. Feel like Vic Mackie, but with slightly more hair and way less tough. Still. #
- @elizabethgenco Not home, but to my destination safely. And if I can’t get a doughnut, I guess I’ll have to settle for vacation! in reply to elizabethgenco #

- 4 pages of new Split Lip script done (more than halfway home on this one) and I am tired from a busy week. Hello couch. #
- @debaoki I saw some blogs covering the iPad name because of recent trademark filings, but no one seemed to take it seriously. Oops! in reply to debaoki #
- 5 pages of script on a new Split Lip story today = comics success. This one’s neat: a reinterpretation of an earlier idea I forgot I’d had #

- @joeymanley Absolutely. That’s partly how I see Split Lip. It’s not in the greats’ neighborhood - maybe someday! - but they’re my yardstick in reply to joeymanley #
- @joeymanley Yeah, that’s what I meant. Sorry - 144 characters just aren’t enough sometimes! in reply to joeymanley #
- @joeymanley You’re talking about the overall artistic achievement (iffy term, I know) of the work? in reply to joeymanley #
- @joeymanley But, content-wise, they’re two totally separate beasts - strips vs. short stories, 3-panels vs. comic page, etc. in reply to joeymanley #
- @joeymanley It depends. In terms of overall success readers, finances, publishing, etc.), I’d love Split Lip to be the next PvP. in reply to joeymanley #

Split Lip Conventions 2009

When it comes to comics, 2009 held a lot of firsts for me: first paid comic work, first self-published TPB, first time at conventions promoting and selling my work. With my final convention of the year ending last weekend, I’m looking back at this first year. All things considered, I’m really looking forward to my second year on this beat.
I started the convention year in Portland, ME, at the Maine Comics and Arts Festival (MeCAF) in May. A fitting beginning, since it was both my first convention and the first MeCAF ever. I had a solid weekend, really enjoyed Portland, and met some nice folks (including fellow PVDer, Zack Giallongo). A good start to the season.

A Busy Weekend for Comics

If you’re me, this weekend is - as the West Coats kids say - hella busy with comics. Here’s how it breaks down:
On Saturday, I’ll be selling and signing Split Lip at That’s Entertainment at 244 Park Ave., Worcester, Ma., from 12-4. A few other local talents will be on hand, too, so swing by and start your Halloween off right - with comics!
That night, before heading out to trick or treat, I’ll be making an appearance on Sci-Fi Saturday Night to talk Split Lip. Listen live at 8 pm Eastern or check out the recording forever after.
Then, after a night of candy eating, I’ll be hitting the road bright and early to the Albany Comic Con. That show, which also features Fred Hembeck, Jamal Igle, Ron Marz, Todd Dezago, and others, runs from 10-4 at the Wolf Road Holiday Inn in Albany.
How can you resist three chances to see or hear me (or both!) in 36 hours. My guess? You can’t.
