Last Night at the Lobster, by Stewart O’Nan

last night at the lobster

Some days I really miss working high school/college jobs, at movie theaters, Staples, and restaurants. They weren’t necessarily good jobs, but the camaraderie and the pride in them was pleasing. O’Nan’s short novel, about the last day of a Red Lobster, made me want those jobs again, if only for a while.

Split Lip at E. Hanover Comics Show This Sunday

split lip logo

Hey, NY Metro Area Split Lip fans: I’m going to be the comic show in East Hanover, NJ, this Sunday. The show is at the Ramada Conference Center (130 Route 10, East Hanover, NJ). It runs from 10 am - 4 pm and it will cost you just a lousy $2 to get in.

I’ll be there, resplendent in my finery, selling Split Lip. If you’re local or semi-local, come by and say hi!

Pictures at a Revolution, by Mark Harris

pictures at a revolution

Harris’ compelling history of Hollywood in flux examines the 1968 Best Picture nominees (including Bonnie and Clyde and The Graduate) and the transition to the New Hollywood that they heralded. Despite being 400-plus pages, Pictures was easy to read in one sitting. Highly recommended to anyone interested in entertainment or social history.

Rum, Sodomy and the Lash, by Jeffrey T. Roesgen

rum sodomy lash

My favorite books in the 33 1/3 series are those that deeply illuminate the creation of an album or that weave a compelling fiction out of the album’s raw materials. This edition attempts to straddle the line and, while it provides some interesting historical detail, fails to fulfill the promise of either.

The Goon Vol. 7: A Place of Heartache and Grief

the goon vol 7

By Eric Powell

The Goon is a strange comic combination of humor, horror, and 30s-era crime. While early volumes were hilarious, recently the jokes have faded for me. This volume, despite its promise of greater trouble and tragedy later, made me laugh out of loud - a welcome reminder of why I enjoy the series.

Pluto Vol. 3, by Naoki Urasawa

pluto urasawa vol. 3

What’s so compelling about the sadness of the characters in this murder mystery? Their hangdog faces and shadowed cheeks are the most effective evocation of world-weary sadness I’ve seen in comics. Perhaps I’m interested in their revelations, but I’m not sure. Dealing with the terrible things done in their pasts is fascinating.
