Cat-Eyed Boy Vol. 2, by Kazuo Umezu

cat eyed boy vol. 2

This volume finishes the earlier volume’s interminable Band of 100 Monsters. But, as the book proceeds, the stories become better/weirder, the art more polished. The story about the father pledging his son to a snake featured the most shocking event in a comic I’ve read recently; I actually did a double take.

Convention Reminder: Split Lip at MCAF May 17

split lip logo

Hey Folks - just a reminder that I’ll be at the Maine Comics Arts Festival in Portland on May 17 selling Split Lip Vol. 1. This is the first year of the show, but it looks to be shaping up terrifically well, with guests including Becky Cloonan and Gabrielle Bell.

If you’re in New England, or maybe southern Canada, you should consider coming out. I’d especially love to meet you if you’re a Split Lip reader.

Hope to see you there!

Meathaus SOS, by various artists

meathaus sos

Another installment of the long-running alt.comics anthology that earlier introduced me to Tomer Hanuka, Farel Dalrymple, and James Jean. Those issues felt like revelations, worlds opening up. This one, though offering some pretty art (and a surprising number of horror comics), feels a little heavy with the unappealing, undercooked alt.comics I dislike.

A Drifting Life, by Yoshihiro Tatsumi

a drifting life by yoshihiro tatsumi

An impressively compelling 800+ page autobiography in comics form. Tatsumi’s life tells the story of the early years of manga and how he helped pioneer things taken today as standard. I think, like Tatsumi, I’m going to tie on a headband every time I sit down to write comics from now on.
